Whether you’re jetting off on a sunsoaked break or just want to keep things tidy ‘down there,’ shaving your bikini line can be tricky. But it doesn’t have to be. If you choose to remove your pubic hair, there are plenty of things you can do to avoid irritation. We’ve got everything you need to know about shaving this delicate area, so you can feel confident whatever your plans.
The guide:
Understanding your skin:
Before you shave your pubic hair, it’s a good idea to know more about this area of your body. It’s a bit of a catch 22. Your skin is super sensitive in this area, but the hair is often quite coarse. That means you need to be extra careful when shaving your pubic hair. Without the proper prep, you’re likely to experience irritation, razor bumps, ingrown hairs and nicks.
It’s always important to take the time to prepare your skin before shaving. If your hair is quite long, consider trimming with round-edged scissors to reduce the amount of times you have to go over each section. Use a mirror if you can’t see what you’re doing (trust us, it helps).
Gently exfoliate the area:
After trimming any excess length, it’s time to exfoliate. Use a gentle scrub or an exfoliating mitt to remove any dead skin cells. This helps to avoid ingrown hairs and provides a smoother surface for the blades to get to work.
Remember: don’t press too hard! You don’t need to scrub vigorously on this area. Your bikini line is very sensitive, so use gentle movements to exfoliate before shaving.
Pick the right shaving tools:
Getting the best bikini line shave is all in the tools. Pick a fresh, sharp blade before you get started. This helps to make sure you get the closest possible shave with the first stroke (reducing the amount of times you have to go over an area). You might also want to use a bikini-line specific blade. Our in-built bikini line styling blade is perfect for getting those hard-to-reach areas (as well as experimenting with different designs).
Our razor subscription service is your go-to. It means you always have new blades on hand when you want to tackle your bikini line. Plus, our German-engineered precision blades give the closest possible shave thanks to our SmoothGlide technology.
Shave carefully:
Start by soaking your skin in warm water. Around 5 minutes is best, as this helps to hydrate and sooth your skin. A warm shower or bath is the perfect option (you might want to save shaving your bikini line until after you’ve washed your hair and body).
Like we’ve mentioned above, it’s important to reduce the amount of times you go over an individual area. This helps lessen irritation, ingrown hairs and cuts. Try pulling the skin taut to smooth out the area and any folds.
It’s a good idea to start shaving in the direction of the hair growth. If you find that you want a closer shave, gently shave against the grain. Be sure to lather up with plenty of shaving cream too (and don’t be tempted to use shampoo or shower gel instead). This area needs plenty of hydration, so a dedicated shaving cream is best.
Look after your skin after shaving:
Once you’ve rinsed off, pat your bikini line dry. Try to avoid rubbing with a towel, as your skin is likely to be a little irritated after shaving.
Re-hydrate your skin with a sensitive-friendly moisturiser. We love our Shave Balm, which includes plenty of natural, hydrating ingredients like coconut butter, almond oil and manuka honey.
