We’ve got a step-by-step guide on getting the best tan (without harming your skin) and how to keep it lasting as long as possible...
1. First things first, make sure to exfoliate 24 hours before applying your self-tan. This will remove any old tan build up and ensure a smooth tanning surface by removing any dead skin cells, meaning you’re less likely to experience flaking or cracking. A textured exfoliation mitt works great for this, plus for an extra boost you can use a gentle body scrub alongside this.
2. When you’re ready to start tanning, make sure you’ve first moisturised dry areas like hands, knees, ankles, and elbows. This will avoid tan build up in these areas and give a much more natural glow overall!
3. Pick the right tools! Choose a tan that’s hydrating, long-lasting and streak-free. It’s important to make sure you use the right application tools too. A velvet mitt is best for a smooth, even application, while a back applicator is perfect for reaching those tricky areas (especially when no one’s around to help). Last but certainly not least, your new secret weapon - a soft kabuki brush – perfect for blending tan effortlessly into streak-prone areas like face, hands and feet. Streaky hands will be a thing of the past!
4. Moisturise, moisturise & moisturise! It’s important to apply a good moisturiser daily once your tan has developed. This will avoid any cracking and patchy tan appearing (no thank you). If you’re wanting an extra tan boost or top up, try alternating your moisturiser with a gradual tan lotion every other day – this will give you an extra glow boost and keep your tan going even longer!

- Avoid hot tubs and swimming pools as much as possible
- Pat skin dry after showering, don’t rub the skin
- Never skip exfoliation before tanning
